Iceland

A lake forms in the crater of an extinct volcano in the foreground. In the distance are the lower slopes of Mount Hekla, an active volcano which erupts roughly every 10 years. The slopes you see are made from layers of numerous lava flows. Mount Hekla was known during the Middle Ages as one of the two Gates of Hell. Photo © copyright by Scott Fricke.
