50 million years ago the Bisti Badlands were part of the Great Inland Sea, a vast sea stretching from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, splitting the North American continent. As the waters receded, lush vegetation covered the area. These remnants from the days of the dinosaurs are now revealed in the sculpted sandstone gardens of the area. This tree is about 40 feet long.

Crepuscular rays appear to converge on the sun, anticrepuscular rays converge in the opposite direction and you must have your back to the sun or sunset point to see them. They appear to converge towards the antisolar point, the point on the sky sphere directly opposite the sun. Named for the hole in it's ceiling this lava tube is relatively short, as most of it has collapsed. The grooves on the left were created when boulders flowing with the lava gouged the side of the tube. This particular lava tube is about 40 feet high. El Malpais National Park.

It is sometimes difficult to photograph in a slot canyon due to the narrow spaces. As the sandstone walls of the canyon go up, they curve in all directions, sometimes so much so that you can look straight up and not see the sky. This sun halo formed above Loveland Pass on a cold winter day. They are created by the dispersion of light as it passes through ice crystals found in upper level cirrus clouds. This sun halo is unique in that almost all features associated with a 'perfect' sun halo are visible. This was in fact a double sun halo, with a second ring forming outside of this one.

Entry to tomb structure. The entry and shaft into the center of the mound is oriented so that at the winter solstice as the sun rises it shines down the shaft to the 'altar' at the terminus. It is interesting that the spiral petroglyphs found on the stones that guard the entry can also be found at ancient Anasazi sites in the Colorado Plateau area of the southwest United States. While it is not known for sure what the symbols mean, many scholars think that both cultures used the symbols to represent the cycle, or continuity of life.

The absolute darkness of the lava tube gives way to a small glow of light from a small opening in the top of the tube created when part of the top of the tube collapsed. The height of the tube in this area is about 20 feet, but at the skylight it is over 30 feet due to the rock fall. This is one of many lava tubes in El Malpais National Monument.

The Bisti Badlands are almost devoid of plant life and are a wonderland of exotic sandstone formations. This hillside caught my eye because of the banding in the sandstone overlaid by the erosion patterns.

As we explored the lava tube and walked around a bend in the tube, the darkness gave way to a small glow of light. The light came from a small opening in the top of the tube created when part of the top of the tube collapsed. This is one of many lava tubes in El Malpais National Monument

This image shows the North American and European continental plates pulling apart at Pingvellir, Iceland. The European plate on the right is also sinking. Iceland is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the only part that is above the surface of the ocean.

The Interior
In the middle of the island is a vast volcanic desert called The Interior. When the Vikings settled the island this was the area that convicted criminals were sent to for a period of time. Uninhabited and almost devoid of life, this area was outside of the law, and where the term 'outlaw' originated. For most, being 'outlawed' was a death sentence.

Volcanos
A lake forms in the crater of an extinct volcano in the foreground. In the distance are the lower slopes of Mount Hekla, an active volcano which erupts roughly every 10 years. The slopes you see are made from layers of numerous lava flows. Mount Hekla was known during the Middle Ages as one of the two Gates of Hell.

Icelandic Horses
Icelandic horses are direct descendants of the horses brought to the island by the Vikings over a thousand years ago. In that time they have not been bred with any other horses and are a distinct breed. Other breeds are not allowed to be brought into the country, and if a horse leaves the country it can not return in order to maintain the purity of the breed and protect them from diseases they have no natural immunity of. These horses were part of a herd being led to a new pasture.

Landmannalaugar is an incredible area consisting of many ranges of mountains made from colorful volcanic rhyolite. Evidence of recent volcanic activity can be seen with the fumerole in the middle of the image and lava flows in the distance.

The Markaflojt River runs through a wide glacial plain that gathers hundreds of smaller glacial streams as it flows towards the coast. As they gather together, sediments of different colors and algae in the water combine to create a swirling abstraction of color. For scale, on the diagonal this is probably about 1/4 of a mile.

Iceland has hundreds of incredible waterfalls and Dynjandi is one of the most impressive. The main fall is over 300 feet high and 200 feet wide, below are 5 or 6 other falls that wind down the hillside. About 100 feet behind where I took this image the stream flows into a beautiful fjord.

Basalt Beach
These volcanic basalt columns are a bit unusual, as they rise out of the beach they bend 90 degrees. At the bend they are the weakest and the columns break apart. The fallen rocks are then scoured white by the waves. Vogurviti, Iceland

These volcanic basalt columns rise out of the ocean on the north coast of Iceland at a place called Vogurviti. I was trying to get a unique view of the columns so I put the camera on a tripod with a remote shutter release and held the tripod by the bottom of the legs out over the cliff face and triggered the shutter with the remote.

Vatnajokull
Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Europe and larger than all the other glaciers combined. Its ice is over 3,200 feet deep in places. In all, glaciers cover roughly 11% of Iceland's 40,000 square miles. This finger of Vatnajokull, called Breidamerkurjokull, flows into Jokulsarlon (glacial lagoon) on Iceland's southern coast. Icebergs calve off the glacier and float around the lagoon and then either melt or flow out into the ocean.

Jokulsarlon, means 'glacier' (jokull) 'lagoon' (sarlon) in Icelandic. It is one of the most beautiful places in the country. This image was at midnight on the summer solstice. This time of year the sun dips below the horizon for a couple hours but it never gets dark.

This image was taken minutes before midnight on the summer solstice. The clear ice chunks looked like gems washed up on the black volcanic beach rock.

This glacier has ground its way through a lava field and then retreated, exposing the black volcanic rock below. You can also see the glacial stream emerging from the face of the glacier. The black lava and white glacier is offset by the bright green moss that grows on the lava on the edge the glacier.

Legend says an early Viking settler feuded with his children and to deprive them of his wealth he used his incredible strength to hide a chest of gold behind the 200 foot high falls. For generations young men attempted to retrieve the chest and failed. The story says one man finally reached the chest but when he tried to pull it out of the torrent a brass ring came off in his hand. That ring now adorns the front door of the local church. I set a timer on my camera and ran out to add some scale to the waterfall.

Strokkur Geysir
The word geyser originated in Geysir, Iceland home to the highest and third highest geysers in the world. Old Faithful in Yellowstone is the second highest. While Old Faithful erupts once every 70 minutes or so, Strokkur (the Churn) goes off about every 5-10 minutes and reaches a height only a few feet shorter than Old Faithful. The highest geyser, the Great Geyser, can be seen in the background steaming, just to the left of the erupting geyser. It rarely erupts anymore as Icelanders for years would try to force an eruption on Iceland's Independence Day by throwing rocks into the vent, which over the course of time has had the opposite effect. When it does erupt it can reach a height of over 200 feet.

Cliff Palace at Night
In 2006 Mesa Verde National Park celebrated their 100th anniversary as a National Park. On the last day of the year long celebration they lit the largest ruin in the park, Cliff Palace, with lanterns. A park ranger said this will be the last time they ever do this, so it was literally a once in a lifetime opportunity. Apart from the crowds, one could envision what Cliff Palace might have looked like 800 years ago when it was inhabited and lit only by fires lit by the Anasazi. It was definitely a memorable night. This panoramic image was stitched together from 3 photographs.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve has the tallest sand dunes in North America, some reaching over 700 feet high. Dust is blown across the San Luis Valley from the San Juan Mountains and come to rest against the western side of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Coral Pink Sand Dunes
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes are located near Zion National Park. They were created from erosion of the red sandstone prevalent in that area. This image was taken just after sunrise on a cloudless morning. The bright color of the sunlit dunes contrasting with the deep blue sky and the deep black shadows attracted my eye.

The Racetrack
This is a dry lake bed, or playa, in Death Valley. The playa is full of rocks that appear to move along the surface and create tracks. No one really knows how this occurs but scientists believe they move when the playa is wet and heavy winds move the rocks on the lubricated surface.

This is a sandstone formation called the Cracked Eggs, or the Egg Factory in the Bisti Wilderness. I camped here overnight to photograph the formation in the golden early morning light. Hiking out here at dusk I almost stepped on a rattlesnake in the dim light. Luckily, it was as startled as I was and slithered off in a hurry.

As we hiked up to Delicate Arch at dusk the clouds were threatening and it was obvious there would be no golden light at sunset. I decided to continue on and experiment with new compositions of this iconic arch. Dead Horse View
This image was taken at Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab. I have been here a number of times but none have matched the incredible color display at sunrise on this morning. This viewpoint looks out over the desert landscape near Canyonlands National Park.

Petrified Forest
Located in the Arizona desert, Petrified Forest National Park used to be a marsh. When the trees died and fell they began to decay and mineral sediment filled in where the organic material had been. Different minerals create the many colors of the logs. Over time the trees were covered in silt and sand and eventually that turned to sandstone. Now the sandstone has started to erode away, revealing the petrified logs seen here.

This image was taken in late December when the sun can't reach the bottom of the slot canyon. Instead of the bright orange glow normally associated with this slot canyon, winter finds the sandstone walls awash in deep reds and purples. The sculpted shapes of Antelope Canyon are formed by erosion from flash floods crashing through the narrow confines of the canyon.

The Narrows
The Narrows is located in Zion National Park. At the Narrows the gorge is 15 feet wide and 1300 feet deep with the Virgin River flowing from wall to wall. A solitary tree clings to the sandstone cliff face.

Tight Spot
This is one of the tightest slot canyons I've been in. At this point it is probably less than 18 inches wide. We had to take off our packs and walk sideways through this section. The walls were lined with sandstone nodules that made the walls very rough to the touch. As I came around a bend, the walls ahead were glowing orange from the reflected light coming down into the canyon. This canyon is in the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument

Fire Aspens
When I first viewed these aspen trees they appeared to be on fire. The early morning sun, just rising over an embankment, backlit the trees while the hill behind was still in shade. The multi-colored fall leaves and a breeze gently moving through the leaves heightened the fire effect. This image was taken the morning after incredible winds tore through the area, toppling many trees throughout the San Juan Mountain region. You can see a number of fallen trees in this image.

Tall Aspens
A stand of tall aspen trees in fall color. The white boles standout against the autumn colors of the trees. The trees are complimented by the changing colors of the grasses and brush on Kebler Pass. Kebler Pass is renowned for it's large expanses of aspen groves.
