Iceland

Icelandic horses are direct descendants of the horses brought to the island by the Vikings over a thousand years ago. In that time they have not been bred with any other horses and are a distinct breed. Other breeds are not allowed to be brought into the country, and if a horse leaves the country it can not return in order to maintain the purity of the breed and protect them from diseases they have no natural immunity of. These horses were part of a herd being led to a new pasture. Photo © copyright by Scott Fricke.
