Entry to tomb structure. The entry and shaft into the center of the mound is oriented so that at the winter solstice as the sun rises it shines down the shaft to the 'altar' at the terminus. It is interesting that the spiral petroglyphs found on the stones that guard the entry can also be found at ancient Anasazi sites in the Colorado Plateau area of the southwest United States. While it is not known for sure what the symbols mean, many scholars think that both cultures used the symbols to represent the cycle, or continuity of life. Photo © copyright by Scott Fricke.
