Sun Halo

Colorado

This sun halo formed above Loveland Pass on a cold winter day. They are created by the dispersion of light as it passes through ice crystals found in upper level cirrus clouds. This sun halo is unique in that almost all features associated with a 'perfect' sun halo are visible. This was in fact a double sun halo, with a second ring forming outside of this one.
