Vatnajokull

Iceland

Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Europe and larger than all the other glaciers combined. Its ice is over 3,200 feet deep in places. In all, glaciers cover roughly 11% of Iceland's 40,000 square miles. This finger of Vatnajokull, called Breidamerkurjokull, flows into Jokulsarlon (glacial lagoon) on Iceland's southern coast. Icebergs calve off the glacier and float around the lagoon and then either melt or flow out into the ocean. Photo © copyright by Scott Fricke.
